Day 1: Learn about polar expeditions and Viking heritage in Oslo

Welcome to Norway. Today, drop your bags at your city center hotel and take some time to explore our capital.

On the Bygdøy peninsula, just a short ferry ride from the city center, you will find many exciting museums that are waiting for you to be discovered: the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History, the Kon-Tiki museum with exhibits on explorer Heyerdahl’s expeditions including his raft Kon-tiki, and Fram, the Polar Exploration museum. These museums will give you insight into our country’s history. We also recommend the new MUNCH Museum for its impressive architecture and extensive collections.

Enjoy your afternoon/evening with a stroll on the roof of the Opera house or walk up Karl Johan street towards the Palace.

Day 2: Take the train through the scenic Norway countryside
Day 2: Take the train through the scenic Norway countryside

Today your hiking adventure starts. Board the Bergen Railway in Oslo and enjoy the ride for about 3.5 hours, hopping off before the train reaches Bergen. Now, don’t confuse Norway rail journeys with commuter train trips back home. The country boasts some of the most beautiful, thrilling, and unique rail lines found anywhere. Enjoy the rural scenery that will pass by your window. You will get off in the mountains.

Your hosts will pick you up at the train station and drive you to their hotel. You will love this place, off the beaten path, way up in the mountains. Relax, listen to how quiet it is here and breathe in the fresh air. Your stay includes full board, breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Day 3: Get ready to explore the mountains by foot

Your hotel is close to great hiking terrain, and it’s well suited for the warm-up portion of your hiking vacation since the hills are not too steep. This area has many well-marked hiking trails to choose from. You will find rest stops with grill cabins and easily accessible lakes for swimming and fishing. Your hosts can give you the best local tips for hikes suited for you and the weather.

Make sure to pack everything you need for a day hike. Enjoy your hiking day!

Day 4: Great hiking opportunities near Flåm
Day 4: Great hiking opportunities near Flåm

You will continue your train journey for about 2 hours to a hotel not far from Flåm. This traditional hiker’s hotel is situated 840 meters (2756 ft) above sea level.

The hotel can only be reached by train or foot. The furnishings here are cozy and comfortable, but it’s the scenery and hospitality that we love best. It can get cool in the mountains at night, so you might like to pull up a leather armchair close to the fire in the lounge. You will stay here for two nights, with breakfast and dinner included.

This area’s wide, fertile valleys and staggering mountains provide hikes for every ability and appetite, and we’ll be sure to recommend our favorites. Since the sun lets summer evenings stretch on and on, consider taking an evening hike.

Day 5: Choose your own adventure
Day 5: Choose your own adventure

A day to explore the area. Take a self guided hike into the beautiful landscape where you can go hiking in the woods, towards a waterfall, down into the valley or up the mountain. There are a number of hiking possibilities in all directions, and you can reach beautiful views on both short trips and longer day trips.

If you would rather explore the mountains by bike, you can rent bicycles at your hotel and cycle a part of the Rallarvegen along a sparkling lake, through a narrow canyon, to the Klevabru bridge, an historical engineering masterpiece.

Day 6: Board the famous Flåm Railway
Day 6: Board the famous Flåm Railway

Today you will be able to enjoy the legendary Flåm Railway, also known as the most beautiful train ride in the world, to Flåm (appr. 50 minutes).

If you’d rather descend into the valley with adrenaline in your blood you can take the zipline, the longest/highest in Scandinavia, with a 300 m (984 ft) descent over 1,3 km (0,8 miles), for the first stretch. At the foot of the zipline, you can choose to cycle down all the way to Flåm or take the train from another stop. Don’t worry about your luggage – we’ll arrange to send it down to Flåm by train so it’s waiting for you when you arrive.

From Flåm your journey continues with a fjord cruise through the narrow Nærøyfjord which is included on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The Vikings television series and the movie Frozen drew inspiration from this fjord. The tall mountains, tidy farms, and waterfalls will take your breath away.

After the fjord cruise, you arrive in a small village, nestled in the innermost part of the Nærøyfjord. Take the bus (only 20 minutes) to a three-star hotel with a magnificent view over a valley that was carved out by the glaciers in the Ice Age. They have a charming small folk museum nearby and great hiking terrain. Stay here for two nights, including breakfast and dinner.

Day 7: Hike in the UNESCO World Heritage Listed Nærøyfjord
Day 7: Hike in the UNESCO World Heritage Listed Nærøyfjord

While at this hotel up in the mountains, you can explore the area on foot. There are many hiking trails available starting at your doorstep with different difficulty levels. Go for a short walk around the hotel or if you are in for a challenge, hike up the mountain for a view over the Nærøyfjord.

If you are interested in experiencing the Viking heritage of Norway, you can also visit the nearby Viking Village. Here you can learn about how the Vikings lived and worked a thousand years ago. Wander around the village by yourself or go on a guided tour where you will learn even more about Viking traditions. The living museum is full of Viking enthusiasts in period dress, ready to answer your questions or challenge you to an archery match or an axe-throwing competition.

Day 8: Discover the UNESCO World Heritage city of Bergen
Day 8: Discover the UNESCO World Heritage city of Bergen

From your mountain hotel, you depart by bus and then take a train to Bergen (in total approx. three hours). This city has the ideal combination of nature, culture and exciting urban life all year round.
Bryggen’s wooden row houses by the harbor, painted vibrant shades of ochre, red, and cream, are the visual centerpiece of the city. But it’s walking through the narrow passageways and alleys behind Bryggen that really transports you.

Take a trip back to the Middle Ages to when Hansa (the German Guild of Merchants) dominated this part of the city. This maze of streets and shops are a great place to find a few souvenirs to bring home.

You can take the funicular for spectacular views of the city, harbor, and fjords. The hike down from here is also a great activity. If you would like to have a special seafood dinner, we recommend one of our favorite restaurants in Bergen. It is located on an island that can only be reached by boat, and the menu is different every day.

You will spend the night at a hotel in the city center.

Day 9: End of the journey and flight home
Day 9: End of the journey and flight home

Make your way to the airport and take your international flight out.

Thank you for visiting our country! If you rather add a few days and discover another part of Norway, this is also possible. Take a look at our island hopping add-on or contact us if you want us to tailor this vacation.

                    Review honeymoon
Hike Norway by boat and train

We booked our honeymoon trip here and are so happy we did! With Anne’s help we had a beautiful, stress free vacation traveling from Oslo to Bergen, with multiple fjordgeous stops along the way to hike and take in the spectacular views.

Our private walking tours in each city gave us a chance to learn more about Norway’s history and culture. As vegetarians, we were a little nervous about what would be available for us, but we had no problems finding plenty of delicious options wherever we went (vegans might have a more difficult time). The hotels were clean and comfortable. The detailed itinerary provided by Anne guided us through each day’s travel and accomodations so that we knew exactly what to expect.

Terrific hiking/kayaking/cycling holiday provided by Norway Adventures

Norway Adventures provided us a superb guide who chose hikes and paddles in and around Nordfjord that were challenging but doable and set a pace that we could handle (we’re in our 50’s and 60’s).

Choices were provided each day and the guide asked at us at regular intervals how we were doing during each day’s activities. The hikes were all great and the views we had at the top made our efforts very well-rewarded. We were impressed with the guide’s knowledge and kind, professional demeanour. He was also a great cook! The accommodations were very comfortable and included showers, areas to relax, good wifi service, and great views.

Prior to the hiking/kayaking week, Anne arranged an itinerary that included individual guided tours of Oslo and Bergen, bike rentals so that we could ride the Rallarvegen (highly recommended), the Flambana railway, an afternoon cruise through fjords, all accommodations, and all travel by bus, train, and ferry. The week was very well-organized with all information and tickets about arrangements provided in a form that we could keep on our phones. Everything worked exactly as planned.

Using a local travel company who knows Norway like Norway Adventures does is highly recommended for visitors!

Amazing custom train, boat, and hiking tour

We had a wonderful time doing our customized train, boat, and hiking tour.

We felt like we saw and experienced all the places we wanted to see during this vacation. The itinerary Anne created was clear and thorough, with just the right amount of pre-planned activities and location guides so we could choose our own activities during the trip. We loved having 2 nights in most places so that we had plenty of time to explore each location. We liked that none of the travel days were too long so we never felt like we had to spend a day recovering from travel. The hotels Anne booked for us were absolutely spectacular and the food was amazing. Everyone we interacted with was kind and helpful – and when one the bus was running a touch late getting into Hardbakke, the bus driver had already coordinated with the hotel to pick up our luggage and the postal boat was waiting for us. The transitions were seamless! We will definitely be back to Norway to explore more of this beautiful country. We already have friends who are interested in having you recreate this itinerary for them. Thank you so much for putting this amazing trip together for us!
