Fjord Adrenaline Family Adventure_DAY 6 Via Ferrata experience

What to expect

This vacation is perfect for adults or a family with teenagers or young adults looking for a true adventure in Norway. Start your fjord adventure in Bergen, “gateway to the fjords.” Explore the city before heading out to the coast: hiking to a sea cliff, immerse yourself in fishermen culture and great seafood, or maybe even catch your own fish. Continue into the Nordfjord and enjoy a farm visit, a hike to a glacier, then clip securely into the steel cables of a Via Ferrata mountaineering route high above a fjord.

Go on an overnight kayak tour in the hidden Hjørundfjord and enjoy some white water rafting. Explore the Romsdalen valley by bicycle and foot, then round out your trip by riding ziplines back and forth across raging rivers and waterfalls. Finally, stroll the beautiful streets of Ålesund, center of Art Nouveau art and architecture in Norway. This will be an unforgettable trip!

We’ll provide detailed itineraries and instructions in your personalized travel guide, so you’ll travel safely and securely, without any practical concerns or logistical headaches. Your travel guide includes our best insider tips, including detailed driving directions with recommended sites and stops along the way, as well as a variety of our favorite activities to choose from at every location.

Day by day

Get an overview of what you will experience

Day 1: Welcome to Bergen, Gateway to the Fjords.
Day 1: Welcome to Bergen, Gateway to the Fjords.

Welcome to Norway, and Bergen, your ‘gateway to the fjords’. Pick up your rental car at the airport and drive to your four-star boutique hotel in the city center where you will stay the night.

Take a stroll along the harbor, through the fish market, to Bryggen, a UNESCO World Heritage listed site. Bryggen’s wooden row houses, painted vibrant shades of ochre, red, and cream, are the visual centerpiece of the city. But it’s walking through the narrow passageways and alleys behind Bryggen that really transports you.

Take a trip back to the Middle Ages to when Hansa (the German Guild of Merchants) dominated this part of the city. This maze of streets and shops are a great place to find a few souvenirs to bring home. If you have time, explore the city from a different perspective:
– Take the funicular for a great view over the city and the surrounding fjord and mountains, and hike down.
– Request a 2-hour private city walking tour with our favorite guide. Not only will you learn fascinating stories about the history and culture of Bergen, but you can also ask questions about Norway in general and get a crash course in Norwegian customs and traditions.

For a special seafood dinner, we can recommend a restaurant on an island that can only be reached by boat (not included).

Day 2: Cross the King of the Fjords
Day 2: Cross the King of the Fjords

Get ready to explore the fjords. Travel like the locals, crossing the Sognefjord, King of the Fjords, by car ferry. You will drive for approximately 4 hrs.

You will stay at a small scale farm by the river, with rustic-style rooms with wooden interiors. The hosts are very nice and knowledgeable and the breakfast is first-rate (try the homemade strawberry jam). They also have BBQ facilities next to the river. With cozy sheepskins thrown over rustic wooden benches and stunning river views, it’s a great place to catch the sunset.

You will stay in a traditional farm building, which has recently been restored. Some of the rooms have their bathroom on another floor or even building, but this place is so special that you do not want to miss out. You will stay here for one night.

Today or tomorrow you can walk a part of the nearby waterfall trail with exciting bridges, and plenty of waterfalls, and boulders to scramble on along the river.

    • Total driving time today: approx. 4 hrs

Day 3: Enjoy the fishermen culture at the Atlantic Coast
Day 3: Enjoy the fishermen culture at the Atlantic Coast

Continue your fjord adventure towards the coast (approx. 3 hours). Approaching your destination you’ll see the landscape changing. Rougher terrain, fewer trees and many hulking boulders. This area has endured quite a few storms, so close to the sea. Imagine the fishermen that had to (and still have to!) go out on the sea in all kinds of weather. This is an amazing area, also called Little Lofoten, with colorful fishermen cabins (rorbuer), sea cliffs, small islands, white sandy beaches, and crystal-clear water, but without the crowds.

You will stay in an apartment in a fishermen village. This hotel consists of a cluster of buildings including fishermen cabins, apartments, and the main building that houses the hotel restaurant. The family that runs it will entertain you, no doubt. They have many good stories to tell. We have included a private tour around the village (approx. 1.5 hrs) where you will learn everything about the glory days of the herring fishery. If desired, you can also go on a private fishing trip (approx. 3-4 hrs).

You will stay at this hotel for 2 nights. The seafood dinner at the hotel is famous. We have included a 3-course seafood dinner for you tonight.

    • Total driving time today: approx. 3 hrs
    • Private village tour: approx. 1.5 hrs

Day 4: Explore “Little Lofoten” by foot or climb a via ferrata
Day 4: Explore “Little Lofoten” by foot or climb a via ferrata

Today you will explore the island of Bremanger with one of our experienced guides. The hike starts at the exotic white beach of Grotle. Follow the trail up the craggy cliffs (there are some steep parts in this section), along a river, and over a sweeping plateau to the farthest point of the island. From here you can even see all the way to Norway’s western cape.

The hike back and forth, including time to eat your packed lunch, will take approx. 5-6 hours. After the hike, take a refreshing swim at the beach of Grotle. Water temperatures will be bracing (just like the Vikings liked it), so make like a Viking, let out a yell, and dive in.

Or go on a 4-hour private guided Via Ferrata tour! Climb along Mt Hornelen, regionally famous for being Europe’s highest sea cliff. This is the perfect activity for the entire family looking for an adrenaline rush. Hike along the fjord to the starting point and get to know the basic of Via Ferrata climbing before going to the ‘real’ climbing section. Feel the wind breezing through the fjord and soak in the incredible views.

Tonight you will enjoy a 4-course dinner after a long day of hiking, and we predict that you will devour every well-earned bite.

Day 5: Visit our traditional Norwegian farm and explore the Nordfjord
Day 5: Visit our traditional Norwegian farm and explore the Nordfjord

Check out of your apartment or cabin and get ready to explore the inner Nordfjord (total drive today approx. 3.5 hours, including one ferry). This is our home area, a spectacular and still quite unknown area that has it all. Nordfjord is situated between the largest mainland glacier in Europe and Norway’s wildest coast at the western cape, with spectacular mountains and valleys, rolling farmland and a dramatic coastline.

You are welcome for a cup of coffee at our sheep farm in Davik, from 1860, and we will show you around. We finally get to meet and catch up on how you are doing so far on your trip. Our Norwegian Elkhound Kira is always up for a cuddle. Our sheep, a traditional Norwegian breed, will be happy to come and greet you too.

Cross the Nordfjord by ferry and drive by Nordfjordeid. In the town of Nordfjordeid, you can visit Sagastad and go aboard a Viking ship. This impressive replica is built according to the remains of the ship of a Viking king that once lived in this fjord. Buy a cinnamon roll at the local bakery and stroll through the historic main street with charming wooden houses.

Continue to Stryn. You will stay in a charming three-star historic hotel by the fjord for two nights. Dinner is included both nights. If you would rather stay at a more luxurious hotel, with a swimming pool and spa, that is also possible.

      • Total driving time today: approx. 3.5 hrs

Day 6: Explore the glacial valley
Day 6: Explore the glacial valley

This inner area of Nordfjord is known for the combination of the scenic fjord and the mountain tops and glaciers surrounding it. There is a lot to explore in this area!

Go for a short hike to a hidden glacier or rent bicycles to cycle along the Lodal glacier lake into Kjenndalen to visit the Kjenndal glacier. You could also for example go on a guided hike with husky dogs. If you would rather go on a private guided hike to a summer pasture cabin that’s been owned by our friend Hans Magnus’ family for generations, we can also offer that.

Take the gondola up the mountain and do an easy hike with views over the fjords and the surrounding glaciers. The trails on top of the mountain are well marked.

Day 7: Go on a kayak adventure and camping in the hidden fjord
Day 7: Go on a kayak adventure and camping in the hidden fjord

Drive to Urke (2 hrs). Leave your car here, and get started with your private kayak adventure with one of our experienced guides.

You have an overnight kayak tour on this hidden fjord, the Hjørundfjord, to look forward to. To experience the fjord from a kayak is unforgettable: the silence, the waterfalls, dinner over the campfire, and sharing stories and warm drinks long into the night under the stars.

Learn how to pack your gear into the kayak, then after a short safety and paddling instruction, it’s time to launch. After paddling and enjoying the sheer size of the fjord and the surrounding mountains you arrive at your destination for the day. Follow your guide to your campsite with great views of the fjord. After setting up camp, prepare dinner as a group. Enjoy a long relaxing evening by the campfire, swapping stories. The summer light dims and softens, but it never gets totally dark. Nonetheless, after a long day’s journey, you sleep like a baby in your cozy tent.

Your guide will take care of all the logistics, stable double kayaks, kayaking equipment, camping gear, etc. and will make you a hearty dinner on the campfire. Lunch and dinner today are included, as well as breakfast tomorrow.

Day 8: From breakfast with a view to a hotel with a royal pedigree
Day 8: From breakfast with a view to a hotel with a royal pedigree

After enjoying breakfast in the morning light, with the steam from your coffee mixing with the morning mist off the mountain, break up camp and paddle on. Paddle through the same fjord on your way back but on the opposite side. We’re always struck by how different the views, angles, and villages look from the other side. While your guide points out landmarks and tells stories, you paddle relatively close to land, but not too close because of the danger of landslides. Approx. 11:00 a.m., you arrive back in Urke.

If you are up for going for a hike right upon arrival, there are some great opportunities for that in Urke.

From here, drive a short distance to the hotel where you will spend the night. This ornate wooden hotel is almost like a museum, or a royal hunting lodge, with canopy beds, lush carpeting, antique furniture, and even a suit of armor guarding the fireplace. Kings, queens, and emperors have stayed here throughout history.

You will stay here for one night. In the evening a 3-course dinner at the hotel is included. Enjoy the storytelling during dinner.

Day 9: Let the adrenalin flow on a river rafting adventure
Day 9: Let the adrenalin flow on a river rafting adventure

In the morning, drive to Hellesylt, to the ferry dock to board the fjord cruise. Let the ferry take you through the UNESCO World Heritage listed Geirangerfjord. Be amazed by the waterfalls and the tall mountains with the abandoned farms at the top. You’ll get a front row seat to see the famous Seven Sisters waterfall and much more. (The ferry takes approx. 70 minutes).

From Geiranger, drive approximately 1 hour to a spectacular white water river.

Here your next adrenaline filled adventure begins. A private guide will take you rafting. Or, depending on the water level, you might go canyoning instead. Either way, it will be a day filled with adventure.

Afterward, you will spend the night in a three-star hotel with views over the mountains and the fjord.

Day 10: The famous Trollstigen Norwegian Scenic Route
Day 10: The famous Trollstigen Norwegian Scenic Route

Drive the most spectacular Norwegian Scenic Route: Trollstigen (total driving time today: approx 1.5 hrs). This is a 106 km stretch of road through western Norway’s nature at its most powerful, with a dizzying view of sheer cliff faces, waterfalls, deep fjords and fertile valleys. Take the time to enjoy the scenery and take pictures. After your drive, join a half-day private guided adventure from your hotel.

Choose from a nice hike in a hidden valley with amazing views all around or take a tour on the hotel’s electric bikes. If you’ve never tried an e-bike before, have no fear! If you can ride a bike, you can ride an e-bike. You’ll coast along the winding roads with your guide, and on the steep ascent up to Trollstigen, the bike will give you just the boost you need. Even if you’re not in the best shape, you’ll feel powerful as you charge up the mountain, listening to interesting tidbits and stories about the area.

You will stay in a historic family run hotel from 1860, now a fully renovated hotel with modern amenities and a unique atmosphere. You will stay here for two nights, with generous breakfasts and dinners included.

Day 11: Zipline adventure across the Rauma river

Today, an exciting private guided activity awaits you: you’ll cross the waterfalls of the wild Rauma river on ziplines and in the spectacular climbing nets. Challenge yourself and feel the adrenaline flowing.

We can speak from personal experience: the feeling of being one with nature as you soar back and forth across the raging river is just magic. Celebrate your bravery with a snack around a campfire by the river. (Total activity will take approx. 4 hours.)

Enjoy the rest of the day with a local hike, or just relaxing. The dinner made from local specialties will taste extra good today.

Day 12: Visit the Art Nouveau city of Ålesund
Day 12: Visit the Art Nouveau city of Ålesund

Leave the area and drive to Åndalsnes. Do a short hike to the viewpoint called ‘Rampestreken’ or visit the Norwegian mountaineering center. In the interactive exhibition, you can learn about the triumphs and tragedies of Norwegian mountaineering history. You can even test your own climbing skills on Norway’s highest indoor climbing wall.

Continue to Ålesund (approx. 2-hour drive). Ålesund is one of Norway’s most elegant cities with a classic European character. After a devastating fire in 1904, the city was rebuilt in the Art Nouveau style, with turrets, spires, and graceful ornamentation. Stroll along the harbor and see the fishermen returning from the sea. Walk up the 418 steps to the top of Mt. Aksla for a great view over the city.

Stay for one night in a four-star harbor hotel.

Fabulous Custom Family Trip to Fjords

We had a fabulous 10-day self-driving holiday from Bergen to Alesund. Anouk at Norway Adventures was always responsive to our requests and questions as we worked to create a trip that included culture, beautiful vistas and outdoor activities.

We appreciated the mix of planned activities with guides (a Bergen walking tour, hike, viking museum, and 1/2 day kayak) with “free days” to explore on our own. Guide Thina was great! Hjelle and Kalvåg were especially charming villages with unique inns. Our group (parents and two adult children) all rated this first trip to Norway as a 10/10. Thanks very much!

Trip of a Lifetime with Norway Adventures

Our trip with Norway Adventures was absolutely everything we wanted and didn’t know we wanted. We chose Anne at Norway Adventures to help us plan our 12 day fjord trip and it was the best decision.

She listened to our desire for adventure, a couple luxury stays, off-the beaten-path, traditional Norwegian experiences and delivered flawlessly. We spent 11 days driving from Alesund, to Urke/Oye, Stryn/Loen, Geiranger, and Romsdal/Andalsnes with detailed driving instructions, reservations and activity guides. Our trip was a trip of a lifetime and we owe it to Anne and her team at Norway Adventures. Our favorite experiences were kayaking and camping with Norway Adventures guide Ian in idyllic Norangsfjorden and staying at gorgeous Union Oye after camping. The three course meal was amazing and I am so glad I trusted Anne’s advice not to cancel it. Next favorite was our stay in Stryn and hiking to Bodalsbreen glacier off Lake Lovatnet – stunningly beautiful everywhere you look. Finally, our super comfortable cabin at Gjerdset Turiscenter in Romsdal on a beautiful lake with free use of a row boat and life jackets to fish. We cannot thank Anne and her team enough. We did not want to leave!

Some of the key things that made our trip so special were getting off the beaten path, getting into nature, and feeling like we had Norway to ourselves in many cases. We learned so much about Norway’s history, way of life, food, and culture through meeting special people like yourself, Solveig in Bergen, Sven in Kalvag, Antoine in Urke, Per in Alesun, and Yori in Oslo. It was easy to see what makes Norway special!

An Unforgettable Norwegian Experience: A Five-Star Experience with Norway AdvenTURes

Our experience with Norway AdvenTURes was nothing short of spectacular. Having traveled with many different tour operators around the world, I can confidently say that this experience was exceptional.

From the moment we connected with Anne, the owner, we felt her passion for providing an unforgettable journey. Anne’s thoughtful attention to detail set this trip apart. She took the time to understand the experiences we were looking for and organized an itinerary that exceeded our expectations. Each day was carefully built to include a wide variety of activities, from hiking and biking through breathtaking landscapes, canyoneering through a magnificent river gorge and kayaking in beautiful remote fjords free from tourist crowds. We were delighted to discover the authentic beauty of Norway away from the typical tourist paths.

The accommodations were varied and unique and ranged from beautiful old historic hotels with exceptional cuisine to rustic remote mountain cabins where we prepared our own meals. These added a special touch to our journey, enhancing our overall experience. All our guides were friendly and knowledgeable and made every moment enjoyable and informative. Thanks to Anne’s meticulous planning and insightful recommendations, we left Norway with memories that we will cherish forever.

The service Anne provided during our trip was superb. We did have two minor issues (one with a restaurant and one with a guiding company) but Anne quickly intervened to get these issues fully addressed to my complete satisfaction.

If you’re looking for an authentic Norwegian experience and especially if you want to be away from the tourist crowds, I highly recommend Norway AdvenTURes. Five stars for an exceptional experience!

Unique and Diverse Self-Guided Customized Active Vacation in Norway

We went on a customized active vacation in the fjords planned and organized by Norway Adventures.

We initially reached out by email inquiring about one trip with modifications but Anne at Norway Adventures suggested we have a Zoom call to discuss options. During the call, she asked great questions about what we liked and didn’t on trips and was able to design a trip that fit all of our needs. It was very active with hiking, kayaking, biking and a via ferrata outing and combined with a great variety of interesting and charming hotels. One of our must-haves was food quality (with some dietary limitations) and everywhere we went scored high marks from us on food. One thing to be aware of for this type of trip where we got to see lots of different places is that many of our stays were just one night although we had several with two nights. So be prepared for some quick turnarounds.

Incredible experience in a country with so much to offer

My family of four was eager to get to Norway and hike and kayak our way around the beautiful fjords and the city of Bergen.

Anne was a tremendous help in not only planning out our guided tours, but helping us vet overall decisions for our 12 day visit in it’s entirety. We did a private tour that included hikes around Kalvag and the glacier and surrounding waterfalls and a 3 day kayak tour where we stayed in amazing secluded cabins with breathtaking views. Anne also recommended and booked an incredible tree hut that felt like it was suspended over perfect views of mountains, villages and a lake. Our hikes and kayaking adventures were awesome and our lodging was unique and special. We couldn’t have experienced Norway the way we did without Anne and Norway AdvenTURes.

Customized self-driving vacation in the Lofoten and Fjords

We worked with Anne (Norway Adventures) to plan our 3 ½ week customized self-driving vacation in Norway. Our itinerary included the Lofoten Islands and the Fjords with short stays in Bergen and Oslo.

Anne was super responsive during the planning stage, taking our ideas and activity preferences into consideration while crafting our trip. When we needed to make a change during our adventure, she quickly gave us options and made the necessary arrangements. Her contribution to the success of our vacation was immense, as her advance work made everything easy. She is wonderfully organized. She gave us detailed descriptions of each activity, including files and links for each area we visited, plus vouchers for all activities, hotels, and meals. Her research for us included links to Google Maps for each driving segment, which went so far as to advise us of recommended departure times so that we would not miss scheduled ferries, and so as to miss road closures due to construction. We recommend Anne without reservation!

Trust to build the perfect itinerary for you

I searched for some help planning a trip to Norway with my grandkids, age 12 and 11. When I connected with Anne, I knew I had found the right person.

She was able to guide me to areas outside the well worn tourist path and provided excellent suggestions to satisfy the kids taste for adventure – zipline tour was a highlight along with the floating tents! There were a couple items on the sample itinerary she sent that I questioned but she said, ‘trust me’. I did and have absolutely no regrets. Anne is exactly the partner you need to help design the experience you want – she’s professional, warm, and knowledgeable. I highly recommend the services of Norway Adventures.

            Unforgettable trip

Norway Adventures put together a trip that has our entire family still smiling! Anne took careful notes about the activities we love and the areas we were interested in and put together a trip that included everything,

all while staying in so many beautiful locations. We spent 8 days hiking, biking, kayaking, and climbing our way through the fjords, mountains, and rivers between Alesund and Oslo. Each of our guides was fun and interesting and the activities were challenging and filled with gorgeous views. We had plenty of time to eat well and rest up in preparation for the next day. The self-directed and detailed itinerary kept us on schedule and included plenty of notes and excursions. We really enjoyed kayaking the dramatic fjord near Urke, hiking the gorgeous cliffs near Valldal, and challenging ourselves on the Via Ferrata climb. The places we stayed ranged from a private house with dramatic views of the nearby cliffs, to a modern hotel on the fjord, to rustic hotel and cabin in the mountains. We loved all the care that went into keeping us active, but well rested and fed, all in incredibly beautiful and varied locations. Thanks Anne. Thanks Norway Adventures.

Wonderful outdoor adventure trip in Norway!

Anne did a superb job of designing the trip for our family with two teenage girls, tailoring it perfectly to our requests. We stayed at wonderful hotels and a great house, and enjoyed great hiking and kayaking outings.

The detailed itinerary included many great recommendations, and was extremely useful. We especially enjoyed visiting the sheep farm and being able to talk to Anne and her daughter Lotte. When we had a last minute change of plans, Anne was extremely accommodating and helpful, and also responded quickly to any pre-trip questions. We can’t recommend Norway Adventures highly enough!

            Fantastic Vacation

Anne organized 2 weeks of the most amazing vacation for us. Off the beaten track she found a great balance between showing us the sights of Norway, organizing activities and leaving enough time to relax.

We stayed in some amazing huts – one practically above the Atlantic with the sea hitting the foundation of the hut, one at the bottom of the glacier surrounded by waterfalls, one at a farm etc. – and she also organized activities such as sea kayaking, zodiac adventures, recommended the via ferrata and the Aurland hike. Our kids (11 and 13) loved all of it.
