Day to Day

Itinerary

Sculpture park Oslo

Day 1: Learn about Polar expeditions and Viking heritage in Oslo

Welcome to Norway. Today you have time to explore our capital.

On the Bygdøy peninsula, just a short ferry ride from the city center, you will find many exciting museums that are waiting for you to be discovered: the Viking Ship Museum with the world’s best-preserved Vikings ships, the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History, the Kon-Tiki museum with exhibits on explorer Heyerdahl’s expeditions including his raft Kon-tiki, and Fram – the Polar Exploration museum. These museums will give you insight into our country’s history.

Enjoy your afternoon/evening with a stroll on the roof of the Opera house or walk up Karl Johan street towards the Palace.

Stay at a city center hotel.

Day 2: Take the train through the scenic Norway countryside

Today your hiking adventure starts. Take the scenic train ride (appr. 3,5 hours) from Oslo towards Bergen. Enjoy the rural scenery that will pass by your window. You will get off in the mountains.

Your hosts will pick you up at the train station and drive you to their hotel. You will love this place, off the beaten path, in the mountains. Relax, listen to how quiet it is here and breathe in the fresh air. Your stay includes full board.

Day 3: Get ready to explore the mountains by foot

Your hotel is close to great hiking terrain. The terrain is well suited for the warm-up portion of your hiking vacation since the hills are not too steep. This area has many hiking trails to choose from and up-to-date signposting. You will find rest stops with grill cabins and easily accessible lakes for swimming and fishing. Your hosts can give you the best local tips for hikes suited for you and the weather.

Make sure to pack everything you need for a day hike. Enjoy your hiking day!

Your hotel next to the train station

Day 4: Great hiking opportunities near Flåm

You will continue your train journey for about 2 hours to a hotel not far from Flåm. This traditional hiker’s hotel is situated 840 meters (2756 ft) above sea level.

The hotel can only be reached by train or foot. The scenery and hospitality make up for not being luxurious. You will stay here for 2 nights, half board included.

The hiking terrain will give you new experiences and since the evenings are long you could go on an evening hike.

Cycling or hiking in the mountains

Day 5: Choose your adventure

A day to explore the area. Take a self guided hike into the beautiful landscape where you can go hiking in the woods, towards a waterfall, down the valley or up the mountain. There are a number of hiking possibilities in all directions, and you can reach beautiful views on both short trips and longer day trips.

If you would rather explore the mountains by bike, you can rent bicycles at your hotel and cycle a part of the Rallarvegen, a construction road which once was made for the people working on the railroad.

Flåm railway

Day 6: Board the famous Flåm Railway

Today you will be able to enjoy the legendary Flåm Railway, also known as the most beautiful train ride of the world to Flåm (appr. 50 minutes).

If you rather experience the valley with adrenaline in your blood you can take the zipline, the longest/highest in Scandinavia, 300m (984 ft) high 1,3 km (0,8 miles) long, for the first stretch. At the foot of the zipline, you can choose to cycle down all the way to Flåm or take the train from another stop.

From Flåm your journey continues with a fjord cruise through the narrow Nærøyfjord which is included on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. After the fjord cruise, you arrive in a small village, nestled in the innermost part of the Nærøyfjord. Take the bus (only 20 minutes) to a 3* hotel with a magnificent view over the valley carved out by the glaciers in the Ice Age. They have a charming small folk museum nearby and great hiking terrain. Stay here for two nights, including half board.

Hiking in the Fjord area

Day 7: Hike in the UNESCO World Heritage Listed Nærøyfjord

While at this hotel up in the mountains, you can explore the area on foot. There are many hiking trails available starting at your doorstep with different difficulty levels. Go for a short walk around the hotel or if you are in for a challenge, hike up the mountain for a view over the Nærøyfjord.

If you are interested in experiencing the Viking Heritage of Norway, you can also visit the nearby Viking Village. Here you can learn about how the Vikings lived and worked a thousand years ago. Wander around the village by yourself or go on a guided tour where you will learn even more about Viking traditions.

Explore the UNESCO World Heritage Listed Bergen Harbor

Day 8: Discover the UNESCO World Heritage city of Bergen

From your mountain hotel, you depart by bus and take a train to Bergen. This city has the ideal combination of nature, culture and exciting urban life all year round.

Walking through the narrow streets and alleys at Bryggen is like going back in time to when Hansa (the German Guild of Merchants) dominated this part of the city. Bryggen is today a part of UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

You can take the funicular for spectacular views of the city, harbor, and fjords. The hike down from here is also a great activity.

If you would like to have a special seafood dinner, we recommend one of our favorite restaurants in Bergen. It is located on an island that can only be reached by boat, and the menu is different every day.

You will spend the night at a hotel in the city center.

Day 9: End of the journey and flight home

Make your way to the airport and take your international flight out. Thank you for visiting our country! If you rather add a few days and discover another part of Norway, this is also possible. Take a look at our island hopping add-on or contact us if you want us to tailor this vacation.
