Weather and Climate in Norway

Norway in the Summer

Visiting Norway at any time of the year means you should be prepared for all kinds of weather. You might experience all four seasons in a single day!

Norwegian summers are known for the diverse weather. You can encounter everything from hot to cold, sun to rain, and even snow, depending on your altitude in the mountains. The good news is: you won’t be experiencing exceptional heat here. Be ready for anything though, especially when hiking or kayaking. In Norway, they say, “There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.” So pack smart! Check our insider packing lists for the best advice.

If you haven’t planned on extensive hiking or kayaking, we still recommend bringing plenty of warm clothes for layering, a water- and windproof jacket, a hat that covers your ears, an umbrella, and sturdy, preferably waterproof, walking shoes.

Norway in the Winter

Fjord Norway has a varied climate in winter, depending on whether you’re on the coast, in the fjords, or higher up, and which month you visit. Temperatures can range from -15°C to +5°C.

Norwegians prefer woolen clothing because wool insulates even when wet and it doesn’t smell much. If you’re joining our ski or snowshoe week in the fjords, prepare for all kinds of weather. Check our packing list for ski touring and snowshoe tours.

If you’re chasing the Northern Lights in Norway’s arctic region, where it can get much colder, be sure to bundle up and bring warm clothes. Check our packing list for your Arctic vacation.

Check Norway’s Weather Forecast

Remember, Norway’s weather changes fast, but it can also drastically change between two locations – even when the two regions are close together. For accurate weather forecasts, check these Norwegian websites, which also have apps. These websites are often more reliable than international ones:

  • Yr: A popular weather forecast app in Norway
  • Storm/TV2 weather: An alternative to Yr, only in Norwegian

For a comfortable and safe journey, always be prepared for Norway’s unpredictable climate and weather.
