Packing list for a multi day hike

Norwegian summers are famous for the variety of weather. From hot to cold, from sun to rain, from a breeze to a storm and even snow (depending on how high up in the mountains you are). Especially when trekking for multiple days, the weather can change overnight, you must be prepared to handle this. We advise you to bring enough warm layers, a water/windproof jacket (ensure it is actually waterproof for hours of heavy rain), a hat (that covers the ears) and good shoes to walk in (waterproof). We share this as in our experience, if you are getting wet, you get cold and the trouble begins.

In Norway, the saying goes:

‘There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing’. Here you will read what to do. Pack smart!

For a summer trekking expedition, we recommend taking a 45L backpack. This is of course depending on the weather forecast those days and has to be considered the day before leaving. But still, the weather can be unpredictable, and you are better safe than sorry. Also consider what happens if you get injured and end up waiting a day and/or night for help.

What we recommend packing for the trekking.

Clothes

  • Hiking boots (waterproof/Goretex)
  • Woolen socks, bring an extra pair as well
  • Long trousers/hiking pants, comfortable and preferably quick drying
  • Woolen shirt
  • Fleece vest/sweater
  • As a general rule, you will wear a set of clothes and have an extra dry set containing the most important pieces of clothing
  • Down jacket if you have one
  • Waterproof/Goretex jacket
  • Rain pants
  • Hat and/or sunglasses
  • Underwear
  • Warm/woolen hat or beanie
  • Neck band/buff
  • Gloves
  • Gaiters (depending how late in the season, chance for snowfields)
  • Spare shirt and shorts for use in the huts
  • Slippers for use in the huts
  • Consider water sandals/shoes for crossing rivers

The challenge is that it can be snowy, and it can be hot and sunny and everything in between. The most important is a good jacket which is 100% waterproof, so you do not get wet (and cold) in case of bad weather.

The DNT (Norwegian Trekking Association) has made a very useful list. Also, take a look at their general tips about clothing wise.

Equipment

  • 40-50 liter backpack
  • Drinking bottle
  • Snacks
  • Packed lunch
  • Hiking poles if you do not trust your knees 100% or are used to hiking with them
  • Sunscreen
  • Insect repellent
  • Small first aid kit
  • Knife or multi tool
  • Camera
  • Map and compass if hiking without a guide

Other

  • Toothbrush, toothpaste and a piece of soap (Not a whole toilet bag!)
  • Towel
  • Liner (if you do not rent bed linen in the manned cabins)
  • Toilet paper
  • Money (cash+card)
  • Medicine, if needed
  • One in the group should have a first aid kit and you should consider an emergency bivak.

If you will be on vacation in Norway before or after your hiking expedition, we can offer luggage transportation from your first to your last cabin. This way you can take more than just these bare essentials on your Norway adventure vacation.
