Here we have a packing list of a general summer day hike.
Day to Day
Day 1: Warm-up hike on the Haugsvarden
After pick up, you go for a warming up hike close to Nordfjordeid. We often hike the Haugsvarden. An easy hike towards the summit where you can enjoy your lunch package and fjord view no matter the weather.
The hike will reward you with a 360-degree view over the different fjords around you. A nice gimmick at the top is a plaque with all the names and altitudes of the surrounding mountain tops.
Elevation: 350m up & down (1150 ft)
Day 2: Enjoy the Atlantic coast with white beaches and endless views
Along the Atlantic coast on the islands there’s a rugged, windblown landscape with less vegetation, some surprisingly exotic white sandy beaches and endless ocean views. Depending on the wind and clouds your guide chooses a suitable hike. One of our favourites is to the Veten.
Elevation: 550m up & down (1800 ft)
Day 3: Explore the hidden gem that is the Ålfotenfjord
A little hidden fjordarm we love is the Ålfotenfjord, it has a fantastic valley where we often hike combined with fishing or swimming. While hiking you will be surrounded by lakes, forests, deer, 3000 ft rockfaces, huge boulders, little rivers and waterfalls. And the best part is that you will have all this for yourself. You can hike as far as your feet can take you.
Elevation: 600m up & down (1970 ft)
Day 4: Enjoy a day off or go on an optional kayak adventure
Today you can have a relaxing day off or go on an optional kayak tour with your group. After breakfast and checking out of the cabin we will pick up the kayaks and set out on the fjord.
Enjoy the silence and the beauty of pure Norwegian nature. From the kayak you get to experience the fjord from a different angle. Eat your lunch package at an abandoned farm along the fjord. Typical kayak day would be: instructions, 2 hr paddle, lunch break, 2 hr paddle.
Day 5: Hike up the stunning rockfaces of the Norangsfjord and Hjørundfjord
Deeper inside the fjords we find the steepest and most narrow rockfaces that are over 1800 meters (5900 ft) high. Mount Saksa is a well-known mountain in this area. There are two options, a shorter hike overlooking the beautiful Norangsfjord on one side and the Hjørundfjord on the other side. Or, hike up 1000 meters (3200 ft) to the summit, with majestic views of the fjords and the Sunnmøre Alps.
Elevation: 600m up & down (1970 ft)
Day 6: Explore the UNESCO world heritage listed Geirangerfjord
Today you might explore the Lodalen glacier area. Start with a historic hike along Lodalen lake, where villages were wiped out by a 70 meter (230 ft) high Tsunami twice at the start of 1900. Continue with a hike to the Bødalsglacier with a lunch break at the summer farm. Maybe the cows come to greet you. These hikes give you a full day without too strenuous hiking.
Alternatively, you might do a hike in another area: the hike from Geiranger to Skageflå. You will get a spectacular view down into the narrow fjord, over to the abandoned farm on the other side, and the Seven Sisters Waterfall. This hike is more technical, 2x 400m steep and up and down, but the views are more than worth the effort.
Day 7: The end of the journey
Today marks the end of the hiking holiday in the Norwegian fjords. After breakfast, you will be driven back to Nordfjordeid where the journey comes to an end.
A huge thank you to the Norway Adventures team; their hard work made it such a memorable experience for me. The six days I had hiking were unforgettable. I highly recommend them to anyone who wants the Norwegian experience of a lifetime. If it were possible I would be back hiking with them again tomorrow!
I cannot say enough about our recent trip hiking the fjords! The hikes were daring but doable for a 59 year old in decent shape and my girls were happy as clams. ur accommodations could not have been more comfortable! I hope to do this trip again with my husband. Thanks for a fantastic week!
It was incredible! The small group size was perfect. The accommodations were lovely, in picturesque small towns. If you want to see the beauty of Norway, but get away from the rest of the tourists, this is the trip for you. The hikes are steep, but worth every step. Definitely the trip of a lifetime, and one I will never forget.
