Ultimate Multi-day Kayak Trip Norway 6 days
We are looking forward to helping you out. However, before reaching out to us, please check the list of general information and frequently asked questions below.
This tour is set up like an expedition, where everyone will work together to accomplish goals.
You have to be able to paddle in variable weather; in both calm and windy conditions at a normal pace.
All participants need to be able to swim and be strong enough to lift a fully packed kayak in and out of the water, in rocky and slippery landing conditions.
One or two campsites are situated higher up in the mountains, so you need to be able to hike for 30-40 minutes, on quite steep trails (300 mtr. up) with a medium-heavy backpack.
Our experience is that this tour is not suited for those who have back/hip/pelvis problems or have had these in the past.
We rate this tour as moderate to advanced as this is a multi-day tour with some longer and shorter days of kayaking, with up to 6-7 hours on the longer days and with headwinds. Therefore you do need to be fit enough to paddle for a long duration of time and it requires a sporty spirit.
You do not need much experience since it is not a technically difficult tour but you should be sure you can sit in a kayak for a large number of hours over six consecutive days.
The minimum age for joining this expedition is 18 years, as we require all participants to be self-reliant.
Feel free to contact us if you want a private multi-day kayak tour, as we can provide a customized offer for you.
Yes, we can deny your tour participation upon your arrival if the guide believes you do not meet the fitness requirements communicated up front. We do not like to do this – and has not happened to us in 20+ years – but your safety is our first priority. If you are questioning your fitness levels and your (possible) participation, please contact us.
Start time is 10:00 a.m.
Meeting point is close to Ålesund city center: at the parking by the entrance of Volsdalen camping. Take a taxi to get there (Ålesund Taxi telephone number +47 70 10 30 00). If you do not find the spot: call our office at (+47) 57 62 41 70.
The tour finishes in Geiranger village. Time always depends on weather conditions and ability of the group but you’ll be there at the latest approx. 14:00 (2 p.m.).
You can book a flight from Oslo or Bergen to Ålesund. Check SAS (Scandinavian Airlines), Norwegian Airlines or Widerøe. The flight takes approx. one hour. There are also international flights directly from Amsterdam (KLM) to Ålesund. We recommend you take a flight on the day before the start of the tour. The name of the airport is: Ålesund Airport Vigra.
The other option is to take a bus from Oslo to Ålesund: please check VY. It takes approx. 11,5 hours. It is advised to book the ticket in advance.
From Ålesund airport Vigra you can take the airport shuttle bus to Ålesund city center (approx. 25 minutes). The bus stops right outside the airport terminal and leaves corresponding with each flight arrival. Check EnTur to find the required bus. Tickets can be purchased on the bus.
There are numerous hotels in Ålesund where you can spend the night before departing to the meeting point of the tour. You can check Booking.com or other websites to find a hotel that suits your needs. Alternatively if you combine this 6-day tour with a customized tour from us, we will arrange the accommodation for you.
Since flexibility is required due to weather and kayaking ability, we cannot provide a more specific program than outlined in the day to day program of the tour. The tour will start in Ålesund and end in Geiranger.
Due to excessive headwinds or other weather/group circumstances the guide may decide to adjust the itinerary in order to get to Geiranger in six days. This might mean minor changes like adjusting the distance to be paddled on any given day or in more severe situations (has only occurred twice in 20 years of operation) skip a leg of the tour and transport everybody by bus/car/trailer to the next location to start the next day.
No, we do not cancel the tour in case of bad weather. We only cancel a tour if it is unsafe, though we most of the time find an alternative or adjust the program.
You will sleep in small tents. You share the tent with your friends or family members. In case of odd numbers you might share a tent with another guest of the same gender. In case of heavy rainfall we might choose to use one or two nights in a cabin instead.
Tents are included in the price of the tour.
Yes, it’s possible. On the way to and at camp there are many waterfalls and small streams with good drinking water. Please bring your own water bottle and you can refill it.
We recommend that you bring a fully charged power bank as you, probably, cannot recharge this or other devices during the tour. This tour includes nights of wild camping without electricity, so we cannot guarantee electricity.
Take a look at our packing list for multi-day kayaking tours.
We share the packing list(s) with you before your trip. We expect you to read those carefully and pack the necessary items. If you forget or decide to not pack an item, we have the right to deny your tour participation without a refund. Your guide has the final say in this. We do not like to do this – and has not happened to us in 20+ years – but your safety is our first priority
For example, if you forget to bring hiking shoes, it is impossible for you to participate in the tour safely.
We normally do not paddle in wet or dry suits. Everybody wears ‘normal’ clothes, preferably fast drying materials, and proper rain clothing on the outside. If you have your own dry suit, and the weather forecast predicts a lot of rain, you can consider bringing it.
All kayaking gear is provided by us: single or double kayaks, paddles, paddle vest, 35L waterproof dry bag.
All camping gear is provided by us, except a sleeping bag. You should bring your own sleeping bag. Preferably a 3-seasons (we bring a mattress/pad for you).
It is possible to rent a sleeping bag, including sleeping bag liner, from us. The price is 700 NOK for 6 days (full tour) and can be booked as an add-on when booking online.
Most of the luggage will be required during the duration of the tour, so it will be packed in the kayak. It is best to bring a backpack as you sometimes will need to hike up to the camp.
We recommend bringing a backpack with at least 30 liter capacity but maximum 40 liter. You will need the backpack to bring camping gear from the kayak to the camping spot.
We provide one waterproof bag (dry bag) (35L) per person for your belongings. Feel free to bring your own waterproof bags too.
Yes, unless you have specifically ordered sleeping bag rental through us and it is included in your package. More information above under ‘Do I need to bring my own kayak and camping gear’.
You can leave some belongings in our car in Ålesund. This is at your own risk but we have never experienced problems with this in the past. The car will then be driven to Geiranger and be there at the end of the tour, so you can pick up your belongings there.
We use mainly double and some single kayaks and are open to take your preference upon booking. Having said this we NEVER guarantee the use of single or double kayaks. This is due to the fact that we need the flexibility to ensure that the group can paddle at an equal pace to guarantee both the safety and enjoyment of the participants of the tour. This means that the guide will always have the last say in who is paddling which kayak.
Our guide always carries a first aid kid. If you have health difficulties and require use of personal medication please ensure you have them with you throughout the tour. If you have health problems which can impact your ability to complete a tour please let us know in advance (preferably while booking) for safety considerations.
All our guides speak English fluently.
Group size always varies. Maximum group size is 8 people.
Usually we have 1-2 guides for 4 to 8 guests.
You only pay the 30% deposit when you book the tour. You will pay the remaining balance circa 4-6 weeks before the tour starts.
All meals are included, starting with lunch on day 1 and ending with lunch on day 6.
Below there are some examples of how the food could look like while on tour:
For breakfast we serve tea and coffee made on the campfire, and fresh sandwiches.
For lunch, we offer freshly made sandwiches: we usually use cheese, ham, salami, jam and peanut butter.
For dinner, we cook fish, meat or chicken and vegetables with rice or pasta. All freshly cooked on a campfire. Tea and coffee are also included.
Feel free to bring your own snacks and personal amenities on the tour.
On day 3 it is possible to buy some snacks and soft drinks
Alcohol is not included in the tour however feel free to bring it yourself. Keep in mind that buying alcohol in Norway can be very expensive and the stores have limited hours for sale of alcohol. We recommend buying alcohol in the Tax Free zone at the airport upon your arrival in Norway.
For the amount of alcohol you can bring to the country please check TOLL.
We can adjust our menu to your diet, but only if you inform us about this upon booking (we plan the menu ahead of the beginning of the tour).
The most convenient way to get back from Geiranger to Ålesund is to take the boat that departs at 14:30 (2:30 p.m.), with arrival in Ålesund at 17:30 (5:30 p.m.). It is advisable to book your spots in advance. More information can be found here. Booking here.
Price for a one way ticket is from 880 NOK.
It is also possible to travel by bus but that is more hassle. Check the timetable of the buses on EnTur (the final bus schedule is first available 3 months before the travel date.)
First, you should take a ferry to Hellesylt. Please check Norway’s best for prices and information regarding the ferry. You can book tickets directly at the website.
Next step is a bus from Hellesylt to Stryn. Check EnTur (The final bus schedule is first available 3 months before the travel date.) Tickets can be purchased on the bus.
From Stryn there is an express bus to Oslo city center with a stop at Oslo Airport Gardermoen. It is advised to book your spot in advance. You can book tickets online at Vy.
Stryn is a popular touristic place and there are several bars and restaurants, so you can have a good dinner before taking the express bus to Oslo.
